Ruby On Rails Training in Zurich

by jcf. Average Reading Time: less than a minute.

After having worked with RubyOnRails for over a year, with several successful projects done or in progress, I’m happy to announce the first Ruby On Rails Training in Zurich (german).

This two day workshop in Zurich covers the basics of Rails development with the participants building a complete web application from scratch. They will use techniques from Extreme Programming (XP) so that the participants get the most practical approach to learning and using the things learnt.

I’m looking forward to giving this workshop. Back in the old days (about 10-12 years ago) I did a lot of Lotus Notes work. Back then my team built one of the first LAEC (Lotus Authorized Education Centers) and I even managed to become a CLI (Certified Lotus Instructor). I did Lotus Notes Development and Administration Trainings and enjoyed the experience. I still have contact with some of my pupils from back then – and some of them still work with Notes / Domino.

Here is one former pupil that still works with Notes / Domino – it’s been almost to the day 13 years when Jens-Christian taught us Notes 2.1 development and sys admin :-)

  2. Administrator says:

Yeah – those were the times. I remember showing you how to hack certificates with 2.1 (something with common usernames, back then when there were no hierarchical certificates yet) Fun times.

We have a large number of Lotus Notes applications that we would like to re-do in Ruby on Rails. Are there any tools/techniques that we can use to migrate these applications? Any help will be much appreciated.

Hmm – as far as I know, no, there are no tools available. Let me think about the implications for this for a moment – I’m not sure how much can be done automatically.

The big problem with any substantial Notes / Domino application, is the many multiple bits and pieces of Formula language, Notes Script, Javascript and HTML strewn around in a dozen places. I once did something to move a large number of Notes databases to a corporate Domino Intranet, and it only worked “out of the box” for fairly simple applications.

What kind of databases do you plan to migrate? How many? Any commonalities?
