Links: Installing Debian on Dell Poweredge 1400

by jcf. Average Reading Time: less than a minute.

I have salvaged a Dell PowerEdge 1400 SC with dual P3 / 800 MHz CPUs. It is going to serve as my home file server (with a 3Ware RAID Controller and 480 GB of RAID 5 disks).

So far, it has booted with a Knoppix CD, so I know that it will work (eventually).

Here are the links, that will hopefully help me get this beast (god – it is loud – that will be a problem for the WAF) up and running.

Hey there, found this entry by googling after my own installation of Sarge onto a PowerEdge 1400 failed. I assume you finally managed to install Sarge and I’m wondering if you could share your wisdom.

My box is equipped with an Adaptec SCSI-card (it identifies itself with something like ‘AIC-7892, AIC-7899…’) and a ‘Quantum Atlas10K2-TY092L’ drive. If I try to install Sarge with the 2.6 kernel the installer cannot find any drives to install to, and with the 2.4 kernel it almost completes the install process but hangs in the end.

So do you have any pointers for me? I took a look at the links you provided but couldn’t find anything that helped me. Cheers!

  2. Hmm – It worked pretty much out of the box – with one small change: I don’t use the onboard SCSI raid but instead have a 3Ware IDE RAID controller installed. (Because this server is running at home, the cost of 4 IDE drives + controller <= 4 SCSI drives)

Sorry to no be really helpful to you

I just got Sarge to load on my 2 poweredge 2400
I have the AIC-7xxx series as well, and in order to load the 2.6 kernel you need to start eh installation by typing linux aic7xxx=no_probe
    had no problems after that.
And I foung that solution like 3 hours ago on from Debian them self.
Hope its not too late considering I make its over a year now.
But still thought I would just toss it out there, for the rest to read.
And Patrik, my suggestion for you would be to look up on how to create containers for your drives and RAID 5 them.
